ACT Policing: Youth reminded that ‘You Can Speak Out’

ACT Policing’s Crime Prevention Team has this week launched a new family violence campaign as part of National Youth Week celebrations which commence this weekend (April 10). The ‘You Can Speak Out’ campaign aims to raise youth awareness on family violence issues that affect young people within our community and to encourage young people to speak out and report family violence incidents to police.

It discusses how recent changes that have been passed through the ACT Legislative Assembly ensure that development applications are automatically approved 120 days after lodgement and the only avenue of appeal is on matters of law through the Supreme Court. Combined Community Council Motion (for ratification at April 2010 NCCC public meeting)

On Thursday, 18 March 2010, the acting chair of the North Canberra Community Council, Richard Larson attended a combined community councils meeting. This meeting had been called by the Woden Valley Community Council to discuss a draft amendment bill which Caroline Le Couteur MLA intended to table in the Legislative Assembly. The representatives at the meeting agreed to a statement endorsing the intent of the bill. As the NCCC representative, Richard Larson volunteered to forward the statement to the NCCC committee for discussion and move a motion to endorse the statement. Crimestoppers: Three youths arrested after residential burglaries (1 April 2010)

ACT Policing arrested three male youths in O’Connor yesterday afternoon (April 1) after a series of aggravated burglaries in that suburb. Police had obtained descriptions of three teenage males suspected to be responsible for three residential burglaries in O’Connor yesterday. Late yesterday afternoon, a police patrol in Yapunyah Street sighted three males matching those descriptions and carrying backpacks.

Crimestoppers: Images released of assault suspects, Dickson (30 March 2010)

ACT Policing has released several images of suspected offenders sought over the assault of a taxi driver on Cape Street, Dickson on Saturday, February 27. The suspects shown in the images were in a group of three who were refused travel by a 56-year-old male taxi driver due to their level of intoxication and aggression.

ACT Policing: Woman arrested for aggravated burglary in Turner (26 March 2010)

ACT Policing has arrested a 59-year-old Lyneham woman for an aggravated burglary in Turner last year. Police will allege that the woman assaulted, bound and gagged an 87-year-old female victim in her own home on the 23 November 2009. The woman then allegedly stole a number of items including the contents of the victim’s handbag and her vehicle. The alleged offender will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Friday 26 March) charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, forcible confinement, aggravated burglary, take motor vehicle without authority and theft.

ACT Policing: Police to focus on underage drinking at Skyfire

ACT Policing will be targeting underage drinking and anti-social behaviour at Skyfire tomorrow night (Saturday, March 20), with parents urged to be aware of their children’s whereabouts at all times. An estimated 130,000 people attended last year’s Skyfire event over Lake Burley Griffin. Of the large crowd, only one adult male was lodged in the Regional Watch House for being intoxicated and disorderly in a public place. However police detained approximately 40 juveniles for intoxication and/or underage drinking. These minors were held in temporary youth detention areas at the venue, and parents were called to collect them from the event. …
