Report: ACT Conservation Council Forum – A Conservation Vision for the ACT's Northen Rim

Deputy Chair of the North Canberra Community Council, Richard Larson attened a recent forum hosted by the ACT Conservation Council on 22 October 2009.  The topic under discussion at this forum was “A Conservation Vision for the ACT’s Northen Rim”. Richard has provided notes from this forum and advises that of interest to all northsiders were the talks on Mulligans Flat and a proposal for a second (northern) national park for the ACT which could also include the reserves on Mt Majura and Mt Ainslie. iPrime: Civic Library shut for repairs after skylight collapse

On 16 November 2009, the iPrime website site was reporting the Civic Library has been closed for repairs after a skylight collapsed. The Library was beset with problems when it first opened in 2007 when a freak storm tore through the City causing significant water damage from rain and hail. After that storm over 1000 litres of water was removed in the initial cleanup, water had broken through ceiling panels and flowed under doors, soaking carpets, books, equipment and electrical wiring in the library. ACTPLA: Decorative Lighting Warning (Christmas/Festive Period)

ACTPLA is reminding the community to take care when installing and using outdoor lights and other decorative lighting. ACTPLA warns against buying cheap decorative lighting products which have not been approved for use in Australia by product safety regulatory authorities. Please also avoid buying second hand lights at markets and bargain stores or on-line that are not approved in Australia. Unapproved lights have the potential to start fires and cause electric shocks.

Financial assistance is available to support your children at High School

Did you know that you may be eligible for  financial assistance to support your children at high school? The Secondary Bursary Scheme can provide some financial assistance to low income earners in the ACT with dependent full time students in years 7 to 10. Applicants must be holders of a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card with a means tested payment code.

ACTION Buses, every 15 minutes – REDEX Trial services commences 16 November 2009

The ACT Government’s trial of a new, high frequency weekday bus service, REDEX, commences Monday 16 November. REDEX buses run every 15 minutes from 7.00am and 7.00pm between the Gungahlin Market Place and Canberra Railway Station in Kingston, via Mitchell, Northbourne Avenue, the City, Russell and Barton. All REDEX buses are low-emission, wheelchair accessible and provide bike racks and on-bus information screens. Travel on REDEX buses is free for the first week between 9.00am and 4.30pm to encourage commuters to use the service in off-peak periods.
