ACT Policing: 24/7 patrols planned as police gear up for Summernats

ACT Policing is scheduling around-the-clock traffic enforcement patrols of the areas surrounding Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) and additional patrols of the city’s entertainment precincts over the Summernats car festival period beginning today (Thursday, January 7). Police intend to clamp down rigorously on any irresponsible and/or dangerous driving behaviour and have issued a reminder to all motorists that under ACT legislation, police have the power to seize vehicles for burnouts, menacing driving or street racing on public roadways.

ACT Policing: Police to focus on anti-social behaviour this New Year’s Eve

ACT Policing will provide high-visibility patrols to police anti-social behaviour and alcohol related offences in Civic and across the ACT during the New Year’s Eve celebrations. Around 130 police officers will be working across the ACT to maintain law and order. In addition to normal response capabilities, ACT Policing will be dedicating resources towards the early targeting of underage drinking.

Crimestoppers: Witnesses sought to unusual activity on Kings Ave bridge (6 December 2009)

ACT Policing is seeking information from anyone who may have seen any unusual activity on Kings Avenue bridge between 3am and 6am today (Sunday, December 6) after the body of a man, aged in his late 20s to early 30s, was found in Lake Burley Griffin near the base of the bridge early today.

ABC News: Canberra Airport to 'shoulder Sydney overload' (Aircraft Noise)

ABC News is reporting that the Canberra Airport is extolling  its curfew free status to become the defacto second airport for Sydney as well as indicating an almost obscene willingness to take excess air traffic from Newcastle, Bankstown and Richmond. The North Canberra Community Council has consistently campaigned for the introduction of a night-time curfew at Canberra Airport to protect the amenity of residents. Invitation to comment: Reducing Speed Limits around Shopping Centres and Community Facilities (closing 18 December 2009)

The Department of Territorial and Municipal Services is seeking public comment on the issue of reducing speed limits around shopping centres and community facilities to 40 km/h. Background Speed management is a critical component of establishing a safer road system. Reducing speed limits in areas where motor vehicles need to share the road with significant numbers of pedestrians and cyclists is in line with best practice road safety principles.

In the Canberra Times, 11 November 2009, city reporter Megan Doherty writes about the major review of Canberra’s cycling and pedestrian networks. The article discusses the possible introduction of separated and protected bike lanes.
